Michael R. Carter, founder of Carter & Company, is recognized for creating interiors that are timeless, bespoke, and understated. Rooted in classical design principles yet thoughtfully adapted for modern living, his work reflects a refined balance of color, texture, scale, and form, creating homes that feel both sophisticated and deeply personal.
Based in Boston, Michael's career spans more than a quarter century, during which he has led projects throughout New England and beyond. Guided by a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, antiques, fine art, and enduring design, he creates interiors that honor the character of each home while reflecting the individuality of its owners, resulting in spaces that feel authentic rather than trend-driven.
In 2016, Michael was inducted into the New England Design Hall of Fame and was later recognized as a Boston Design Guide Legend. He is also a two-time recipient of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Bulfinch Award, which recognizes excellence in preserving and advancing the classical tradition in design.

At Carter & Company, the design process begins with establishing a personal connection with each client through listening and learning. The goal is to create an experience that feels approachable and enjoyable, whether it is a client's first time working with a designer or one of many. As an integral member of the client's team, the firm works closely with architects, builders, and landscape architects to ensure every detail is thoughtfully coordinated, resulting in a cohesive project that remains on schedule and within budget.
Early meetings focus on establishing the scope of work, defining budgets, and understanding each client's aesthetic preferences and goals. Michael often invites clients to accompany him on sourcing trips to New York or High Point Market. Using digital renderings and presentation boards, tailored design schemes are developed for each space, showcasing furnishings, fabrics, lighting, and finishes. Once approved, detailed specifications and proposals initiate the procurement process.
From initial concepts through final installation, Carter & Company's experienced project managers oversee each phase with care and precision, providing clients with confidence and peace of mind as their vision is brought to life. Successful projects are ultimately defined by the thoughtful execution of every detail.
